Completely removed from familiar surroundings and a comfortable landscape, Oceans Refuse No River seeks to explore an enchanted place—the wonder, the magic—where the unexplainable and the peculiar thrive. It attempts to understand an island culture’s fascination and reverence for the ocean: challenging and powerful, all encompassing, magnificent, unforgiving yet lenient, endlessly exhilarating and frightening. The vastness, like the unknowable, breeds insecurity.
Drawing parallels between personal insight and universal experience, Oceans Refuse No River examines efforts and desires to suspend moments in time within a space of representation where details are slightly askew or distorted. They live hovering between moments of experience, contemplation, exploration, and memory. Each representation can never be fully realized into its perfect, original form, and never identical. Memory can only be experienced individually. No two people will ever relive in a moment with complete synchronicity, detail, emotion, or perspective. Even events experienced simultaneously diverge in memory.
